Founders Story

Founded in 2018 by Wemimo Abbey and Samir Goel, Esusu was built to include everyone on the journey from financial identity and stability toward financial wellness that leads to wealth building.

In the U.S., your credit score is your lifeline to the financial system. To date, 45M+ Americans lack credit scores, and millions more are locked out of the financial system due to their background, race, and zip code.

Meet the people who power Esusu

Wemimo Abbey

Co-founder, Esusu

Wemimo Abbey grew up in the slums of Lagos, Nigeria. After his mother borrowed money from a predatory lender at 400% interest, Abbey and his co-founder, Samir Goel, launched Esusu to address such financial challenges. He was named to the TIME100 NEXT List and awarded EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2023. In 2022, he was selected by Goldman Sachs as one of the “100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs.” He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota and earned his M.P.A. from NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

Samir Goel

Co-founder, Esusu

Samir grew up in an immigrant family from New Delhi, India and witnessed the financial barriers and struggles his family faced as new residents in America. These experiences later inspired Samir and his Co-Founder, Wemimo Abbey, to start Esusu. Samir currently serves on the Board of Directors at MoMA PS1, the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business, and SaverLife. In 2023, he was named to the TIME100 NEXT List and awarded EY Entrepreneur of the Year Nationally. In 2022, he was selected by Goldman Sachs as one of the “100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs.” He received his Bachelor of Science from New York University’s Stern School of Business.
